Este meme nos ha hecho reír tantas veces y ha tenido tanto «pegue», que incluso en la misma serie animada «Pokemon the Series: Sun and Moon» muchos consideran que se ha hecho una referencia de él, específicamente en el episodio «An Alola! In Alola! Brock and Misty» en el que Ash Ketchum nuevamente coincide con sus viejos amigos Brook y Misty.
En el episodio, Ash se encuentra explorando la región de Alola y en determinado momento cambia su atuendo habitual, ahora portando una camiseta en la que se ve una famosa imagen de Pikachu surfeando, lo curioso es también observar la expresión del maestro Pokemon, que pareciera combinar con el del meme de Pikachu.
Por otra parte, otros fans no sienten que esto tenga relación con el meme, sino que se trataría más bien de una referencia al juego Pokemon Trading Card, donde se lanzó una tarjeta de Pikachu surfeando como parte de Wizards Black Star Promo. Según el pokedex, Pikachu es bastante diestro practicando este deporte.
