En 2017 la actriz inglesa Jodie Whittaker hizo historia en la televisión británica al ser la primera mujer en interpretar el personaje principal en ‘Doctor Who’ (fue la decimotercer intérprete en general en hacer del excéntrico y misterioso personaje) y ahora el medio Daily Mirror ha confirmado que ya no continuará en la siguiente temporada de la serie.
Las razones de por qué se marcha Whittaker no están claras por el momento, pero el medio informa que ella misma se comunicó con los productores de la serie que se transmite en BBC para avisarles su decisión. La fuente de Daily Mirror indicó que «Todo es muy silencioso, pero se sabe en el set que Jodie se va y se están preparando para una regeneración».
Normalmente los cambios del actor o actriz que hacen el papel del Doctor en la serie tardan unos tres o cuatro años. Sin embargo, a principios del año 2020 la actriz de 38 años dijo estar aferrada a su papel y que aún sabiendo que en algún momento tendría que «entregar los zapatos», esperaba que no fuera pronto.
El actor que interpretó el papel por más tiempo fue Tom Baker, él fue el cuarto Doctor en la historia de la serie y lo interpretó de 1974 a 1980, durante siete temporadas. Antes de Jodie Whittaker el personaje le perteneció a Peter Capaldi.
