Klaus: La leyenda del nuevo mito moderno de Santa

A pesar de todo lo que ha pasado en el mundo en los últimos años (pandemias, guerras, cambio climático…) cuando el calendario indica que estamos en Diciembre, de manera automática se vuelve en una época especial por la sencilla razón de que ya llegó Navidad, una festividad que tiene diferentes tradiciones y costumbres dependiendo de a quienes le preguntes, pero que por lo general nos busca transmitir dos cosas: fraternidad y benevolencia.

Uno de nuestros hobbies preferidos durante esta época de celebración y descanso es el de mirar cuentos o películas navideñas que pueden empaparnos del llamado “espíritu navideño”. Dicho eso, hay que admitir que las cintas navideñas se han quedado estancadas en los típicos tropos y clichés de esta clase de producciones: que si una comedia romántica, una fantasía donde el protagonista tiene que salvar la festividad o la siempre confiable adaptación del “Cuento de Navidad” del británico Charles Dickens.

Sin embargo, gracias a Netflix, creo que ya tenemos una historia que con el tiempo ha sido algo olvidada por el público general pero que en lo que a mí respecta merece su lugar cómo una película que no te puedes perder cuando estamos en el último mes del año. Me refiero a  Klaus (2019) del director español Sergio Pablos.

Estamos hablando de la que fue el primer largometraje animado de la plataforma de streaming. La historia trata del cartero Jesper, quien es enviado en contra de su voluntad a la ciudad congelada de Smeerensburg,  donde sus habitantes apenas intercambian palabras y, mucho menos, cartas. Cuando está a punto de rendirse, conoce a un misterioso carpintero que vive aislado en una cabaña repleta de juguetes hechos a mano.

La historia de Klaus supone una cierta revolución en todos los sentidos al reinventar el mito clásico de Santa Claus, un desafío enorme tomando en cuenta que estamos hablando de un personaje universalmente conocido. Pero, no solo los cambios que hicieron y su trasfondo son muy interesantes y creativos de por sí, sino que quizás es la primera vez que podemos empatizar con la figura de Santa, entendemos de dónde vienen sus motivos que lo inspiraron a ser el anciano que reparte regalos en una sola noche y no ser un simple ser mágico sin carácter.

Todo este cambio lo vemos a través de Jasper, quien a su vez va evolucionando a lo largo de la cinta y que logra explicar muy bien la razón de por qué tienes que escribir una carta para recibir un regalo. Klaus nos trae de vuelta a la época dorada de los cuentos clásicos de Disney que lograban dar un giro brillante para volverla icónica y atemporal. Aunque, eso no debería ser ninguna sorpresa, puesto que Sergio Pablos participó en las producciones animadas de “Hércules”, “Tarzán” y el “Jorobado de Notre Dame”.

Ahora que tocamos ese tema, no podemos olvidar mencionar su revolucionaria técnica de animación 2D que demuestra que este estilo merece más respeto y reconocimiento por parte de la industria porque todavía tiene mucho para dar y competir con el 3D. La clave está en especial en la luz, la cual como explicó uno de sus artistas, funcionó como un pilar para sustentar la historia y la narrativa.

Una técnica muy sutil, pero con la combinación correcta de elementos funcionan en armonía y logran crear momentos gloriosos y mágicos en la pantalla. Es una verdadera lástima que no se le haya dado continuidad a este estilo de animación como con las cintas de Spider-Verse simplemente porque es 3D y Klaus es 2D.

Todos estos elementos consiguen ofrecer un cuento navideño, cómico y emotivo, capaz de rescatar valores muy importantes como lo son la solidaridad, educarse, portarse bien y el acto de dar en lugar de recibir, algo que sobre todo ahora con lo que está sucediendo se suele olvidar en estas fechas y que logran resumir con una simple frase que escucharemos varias veces: “Un acto sincero de bondad, siempre provoca otro”.

Klaus creó un nuevo mito

No es una total maravilla puesto que los antagonistas, los dos jefes de los clanes rivales de Smeerensburg, llegan a ser muy caricaturescos a tal punto que llegan a desentonar en varios momentos y la historia llega a ser muy simple para los estándares actuales. Ahora bien, a pesar de ser cierto, recordemos que en esencia se trata de una fantasía que explica una leyenda.

Los personajes y aventuras de los mitos no buscan ser muy complejos o lógicos, de hecho se caracterizan en que muchos detalles se suelen cambiar dependiendo de la época o contexto histórico, algo que sucedía mucho en, por ejemplo, la mitología griega. El objetivo de un mito o una leyenda es ser una fábula que busque explicar algún valor, enseñanza o una moraleja.

Algo que, cómo vimos un par de párrafos atrás con la frase de la bondad, es el punto de Klaus: enseñarle a los niños a través de una historia de fantasía cómo ser una persona de bien puede otorgar un gran regalo que no tiene que ser material, sino que también el hacer amigos y hasta llegar a formar una familia. Un mensaje que sin duda encapsula a la perfección el verdadero propósito de la Navidad y que esta película logra transmitir en una forma que se siente muy fresca.

La película recibió el reconocimiento en el momento de su salida, ganando en los  premios Annie y los BAFTA, pero después de cuatro años de su estreno,ha quedado un poco olvidada. Así que, espero que los que lean esto le den el respeto que se merece a este clásico moderno que devuelve el espíritu navideño a las películas que justo tratan del significado de la Navidad
