Disney anunció a la actriz de Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Rachel Zegler, como Blancanieves en la próxima adaptación live-action del clásico animado. La actriz mitad colombiana también será María en el musical West Side Story, la próxima película de Steven Spielberg.
«Las extraordinarias habilidades vocales de Rachel son solo el comienzo de sus dones. Su fuerza, inteligencia y optimismo se convertirán en una parte integral del redescubrimiento de la alegría en este clásico cuento de hadas de Disney», dijo el director Marc Webb.
Poco después de que se conociera la noticia del casting, la propia Zegler compartió un viejo tweet de 2017 en el que se disfrazó de Ariel de La Sirenita y escribió: «Quiero ser una verdadera princesa de Disney».
La actriz también había publicado en su cuenta de Twitter un mensaje que decía «Sí, soy Blancanieves, no, no me voy a blanquear la piel para el papel». Como era de esperar ya la elección de esta actriz estuvo cargada de críticas al haber seleccionado a una actriz de ascendencia latina para interpretar a un personaje que su nombre proviene de la descripción de que es «blanca como la nieve».
Curiosamente cuando Zegler fue anunciada también se criticó la elección de una actriz que tuviera un padre europeo para interpretar un personaje de Puerto Rico, pues no era «suficientemente latina».
Este es tan solo uno de varios anuncios de elenco que han causado polémica en live-action de Disney recientemente. Entre otros también están el de Halle Bailey como Ariel en La Sirenita, Cynthia Erivo como el Hada Azul en Pinocchio, y Yara Shahidi como Tinkerbell en Peter Pan and Wendy. Ninguna de estas películas se ha estrenado aún por lo que es imposible juzgar el resultado y la interpretación de estas actrices en estos roles específicamente, pero sí es posible conocer sus capacidades actorales y musicales en otros papeles. Al ser películas clásicas de Disney, con múltiples números musicales es muy probable que el talento vocal de estas influyera bastante en que fueran elegidas para cada papel.
Blancanieves y los siete enanos fue estrenada en 1937, se basa en un cuento de hadas de 1812 de los hermanos Grimm y es notablemente la primera película animada de Disney. La historia se centra en una joven princesa que se ve obligada a realizar trabajos manuales por su malvada madrastra, una reina, que está celosa de la belleza de Blancanieves. Cuando la Reina envía a un Cazador para matar a Blancanieves, ella huye y se encuentra con la casa de siete enanos, cada uno con personalidades distintas.
Blancanieves se une a una larga lista de remakes live-action de películas animadas de Disney que ya incluye El Rey León, La Bella y la Bestia, Aladdin, Mulan, El Libro de la Selva, y películas basadas en villanos como Maléfica y Cruella.
