La plataforma para aprender idiomas en línea Duolingo ha abierto un curso para aprender High Valyrian, el idioma de la saga «Canción de Hielo y Fuego» de George R.R. Martin y la serie de HBO, «Game of Thrones».

¿Alguna vez han querido saber por qué Valar Morghulis quiere decir «todos los hombres deben morir»? ¿Alguna vez han querido hablar un idioma ficticio que nadie más entienda? Si les gustaría aprender Alto Valyrio y no fallar en el intento como Tyion, esta podría ser una buena opción. Tal vez sea el colmo de la ñoñez o tal vez sea lo que todos los fans de GOT internamente deseamos.

Los libros no cuentan con mucho vocabulario suficiente para entender el idioma, sin embargo, HBO contrató al linguista David J. Peterson para desarrollar este idioma así como el Dothraki para las escenas que vemos en la serie. Para el próximo libro «Winds of Winter», Peterson le ha brindado a Martin varias traducciones valyrias adicionales.

Por el momento el curso solo está disponible para llevar en inglés. Si bien esta es una versión beta, es un buen recurso para aprender vocabulario básico del valyrio. Por ejemplo, el pimer nivel cubre palabras como madre, padre, hombre, mujer, niño y niña. La plataforma muestra palabras asociadas a imágenes para ver los primeros vocablos.

 

Más adelante se ven algunos verbos y algunas formas de convertir las palabras en plural y cómo conjugar el verbo «ser» en primera, segunda y tercera persona. En estos ejercicios se debe escribir la traducción y para palabras nuevas se brindan algunas pistas. También se prueba el conocimiento adquirido traduciendo de valyrio a inglés o de inglés a valyrio.

Posteriormente se van viendo frases, adjetivos, vocabulario de animales, tamaños, comida, negación, pronombres, números y tiempos verbales. Conforme se va completando cada lección el curso evalúa los conocimientos adquiridos mediante pruebas.

La posibilidad de aprender idiomas ficticios no es nada nuevo. Muchos fans del Señor de los Anillos han analizado los idiomas creados por Tolkien como el Quenya durante años, y los seguidores de Star Trek han estudiado el lenguaje Klingon. La opción de aprender en una plataforma interactiva como Duolingo puede resultar una manera sencilla de comprender el Alto Valyrio para los más fiebres de la saga. Además, es gratis. ¿Y quién sabe? Quizás en algún momento también agreguen un curso de Dothraki.
