En 2017, el estudio presentó una patente para un «dispositivo de espada con hoja retráctil e iluminada internamente». De acuerdo con algunos reportes que circulan en línea, podrían haberlo logrado. Un fan realizó una animación de cómo podría verse esa espada basado en lo que describe la patente. No sería un sable que derrita metal ni corte manos, pero sí tendría una hoja de espada iluminada que se extendería o retraería al presionar un botón como se puede ver en el video.
Recientemente se realizó una conferencia de prensa llamada ‘Una mirada especial dentro de los parques de Disney’. De acuerdo con la periodista Carlye Wisel, que compartió con emoción la noticia en su cuenta de Twitter, durante la presentación Josh D’Amaro, el presidente de los parques de Disney, presentó el lightsaber. Este funcionaba como los de las películas, a diferencia de los sables que ya conocemos que son hechos con luces led pero que no son retráctiles. Los asistentes tenían prohibido tomar fotografías o videos, pero es probable que pronto se anuncie de forma oficial.
