Estados Unidos tenía preparada una misión espacial esta semana (la cual ahora se trasladó para el sábado 30 de mayo) que se perfila como el punto de inflexión para que el turismo espacial por fin sea una realidad. La NASA y la compañía Space X de Elon Musk enviarán dos astronautas a la Estación Espacial Internacional (ISS) dentro de una cápsula llamada Crew Dragon, en una misión de prueba bautizada como Demo-2.
Los astronautas Bob Behnken y Doug Hurley son los elegidos para escribir un nuevo capítulo en la historia de la exploración espacial, además, este vuelo significaría el fin de la dependencia de la NASA por las cápsulas rusas llamadas Soyuz (bastante costosas) y ponerse a la vanguardia con cohetes reutilizables.
El administrador de la NASA Jim Bridenstine mencionó de una manera bastante patriótica que por fin “La NASA volverá a lanzar astronautas estadounidenses en cohetes estadounidenses desde suelo estadounidense”. El despegue del cohete Falcon 9 se llevará a cabo desde el Centro Espacial Kennedy en Florida.
Estas misiones con esta nueva tecnología permitirá a Estados Unidos comercializar el espacio exterior, no solo con viajes espaciales en los que podría ir cualquier persona (que tenga el dinero para pagarlo), sino también con proyectos como filmar una película completa en la Estación Espacial Internacional y demás escenarios más allá de los confines de la Tierra.
