Esta mañana se anunciaron los nominados para los premios de la Academia en su edición 93°. Respondiendo a ciertos cuestionamientos sobre diversidad en ediciones anteriores, los premios dieron algunas buenas sorpresas en sus candidatos en varias de las categorías. El anuncio estuvo a cargo de la actriz india Priyanka Chopra y su esposo el músico Nick Jonas en una trasmisión en línea desde Londres.
Compitiendo por la mejor película están El Padre, Judas and the Black Messiah, Mank, Minari, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman, Sound of Metal y The Trial of the Chicago 7. Mank, cinta de Netflix, tuvo la mayor cantidad de nominaciones con diez en total, incluyendo nominaciones a mejor director (David Fincher), mejor actor (Gary Oldman) y mejor actriz de reparto (Amanda Seyfried), además de mejor película. Le siguen con seis nominaciones cada uno: The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Minari, Nomadland, Sound of Metal y The Trial of the Chicago 7. Promising Young Woman de Emerald Fennell recibió cinco nominaciones.
En la categoría de dirección, la academia nominó a dos directoras (la mayor cantidad de mujeres que ha tenido el grupo en un mismo año), Chloé Zhao por Nomadland y Emerald Fennell por Promising Young Woman. Zhao se convierte también en la primer mujer asiática en ser nominada en esta categoría. Lee Isaac Chung, director de Minari, es el primer hombre asiático-americano en recibir una nominación en dirección. Juntos marcan el récord de mayor cantidad de cineastas de ascendencia asiática en un año. Ambos también fueron nominados por sus guiones. La lista de dirección la completan David Fincher por Mank, y la sorpresiva nominación a Thomas Vinterberg, por la película internacional nominada de Dinamarca, Another Round.
La ceremonia se llevará a cabo en persona en la Union Station de Los Ángeles y en el Dolby Theatre el 25 de abril, luego de haber sido postergada desde su fecha original del 28 de febrero.
