Into the Spiderverse (2018) es una de mis películas animadas favoritas (top 5, por lo menos) y, sin duda, mi película favorita de Spiderman. Por ello, la espera por su continuación, que ya de por sí fue larga, se me hizo aún peor. Mis ansias por ver qué harían con la maravillosa historia de Miles Morales, Gwen y compañía no podían ser mayores, así como la curiosidad por ver cómo llevarían la animación a un nivel mejor que el de la original. La noticia de que tendríamos una trilogía me cayó muy bien y elevó aún más mis expectativas, considerando que nos habrían dado apenas el primero de tres capítulos.

Finalmente, ver Across the Spiderverse (2023) por primera vez fue una experiencia muy diferente de lo que esperaba. La primera parte se caracterizó por una historia muy cuidada, con un excelente desarrollo de personajes y la capacidad para sintetizar muchísimos temas, caracteres y situaciones en un desarrollo narrativo coherente y satisfactorio. Eso por no hablar de la animación francamente experimental, que no se contuvo a la hora de mezclar técnicas, colores y estéticas de manera pocas veces vista. No por nada se llevó el merecido Oscar a mejor película animada.

Mi sensación al verla siempre es de plenitud, por la perfecta asimilación entre fondo y forma y la hermosa historia de superación, aceptación e integración que cuenta. Across the Spiderverse, como era de esperarse si querían seguir la tradición de ruptura de la primera, es muy diferente. Al terminarla, francamente, no sabía qué pensar. Tenía la impresión de haber visto un producto de calidad, pero… sencillamente eso: no sabía qué pensar, cómo sentirme, qué sacar de todo aquello, ¿me había gustado realmente?, ¿era realmente tan buena como la anterior o, incluso, mejor, como mucha gente clamaba?

Tras verla una segunda vez, pude pasar revisión de mis impresiones iniciales y sacar en limpio qué fue lo que pasó, lo que trataré de explicar en tanto resulta útil para comprender a cabalidad cuál es la importancia real de esta nueva película.

Lo más fácil de asumir es que mi cabeza y mi corazón no pudieron con el brutal cliffhanger en el que termina. Y es que, en efecto, es prácticamente cruel: la historia nos deja a los héroes dispersos, cuestionando incluso la verdadera ética de sus acciones en tanto ya no queda tan claro cuál es el camino correcto, y a Miles en las (literales) garras de su versión alternativa, sin una resolución clara y con la confrontación final aún pendiente. Pero me he topado con cliffhangers muchísimas veces y he podido con ellos, ¿qué pasó esta vez?

Creo que en términos generales tiene que ver con la estructura general de la trama. Tal como pasó con la trilogía original de Star Wars, la primera película del Spiderverso se realizó como se realizan la mayoría de proyectos hoy en día: sin ninguna garantía de secuelas. Por ello, Into the Spiderverse tiene una conclusión y resulta suficiente en sí misma, aunque deja un pequeño hilo abierto, solo por si acaso. Across the Spiderverse es el “por si acaso” llevado a cabo, una continuación expansiva de lo ya planteado, hecha con la claridad de que habrá una tercera parte que dará cierre, por lo que no importa que queden cabos sueltos. Más bien, deben quedar cabos sueltos.

Pero esto no explica únicamente el final abierto, sino que afecta toda la trama que, viéndola bien, funciona como un gigantesco inicio, lo que solo vuelve el corte algo más difícil de asimilar, considerando que durante dos horas y quince minutos parece que la película sigue empezando y de pronto, sencillamente, se acaba. Con todo, sí que nos han mostrado un viaje completo, aunque no exactamente es el que esperábamos, pues la verdadera protagonista de este capítulo no es otra más que Gwen. Ella es quien aporta una estructura, digamos, “tradicional” a la convulsionada trama que establece elementos uno tras otro y nos deja al final sintiendo, como decía, que la historia apenas está empezando.

No por nada la película empieza y termina con la propia Gwen hablando de “formar una banda”, metáfora muy eficiente de lo que ha planteado esta historia desde un inicio: el tema de reconocerse en otros a partir de lo que tenemos en común y colaborar por un bien mayor. Al inicio, sola, confundida e incapaz de abrirse, Gwen no consigue sincronizar con su banda y la abandona; al final, tras haber logrado comulgar con su padre y reencontrarse con Miles, reúne al equipo y ocupa por fin el lugar que siempre le correspondió. Claro, esto no ocurre de manera sencilla, pues le toma fracasar una segunda vez, al integrarse al equipo de Miguel O’hara y descubrir que las normas y la frustración de este tampoco la llevarán por el camino correcto. De hecho, Hobbie Brown, alias Spider-Punk, aparece como una variante más de Spider-man pero, a pesar de su poco tiempo en pantalla, representa esa chispa rebelde que Gwen necesita para entender que debe buscar su propio camino, con lo que incluso un personaje fugaz se justifica y adquiere total relevancia.

Con respecto a Miguel, me parece fascinante como resulta un antagonista sin la necesidad de ser un villano, pues su causa, al menos por lo que nos han mostrado de momento, sí que es válida, en tanto la alteración de los eventos canónicos parece tener consecuencias verdaderamente catastróficas. Su equipo entero de gente arácnida representa una enorme área gris que aboga por mantener el orden incluso a costa de sus propios integrantes, lo que no puede más que incomodarnos… pero no nos deja mucho espacio para proponer un accionar diferente: si el multiverso está en riesgo, detener a Miles pareciera ser la única alternativa… ¿o no?

Hablando de Miles, como apuntaba arriba, creo que él no es exactamente el protagonista de esta película, pero sigue siendo el hilo conductor de la trama general, lo que es otro de los grandes logros de este capítulo: Gwen tiene sus propios problemas, que no tienen nada que ver con Miles, lo que le da el lugar que merece como personaje completo, pero esto no implica que la gran dinámica, la esencia de toda la historia, deje de ser el viaje de Miles. Y qué viaje ha emprendido el joven de Brooklyn: heredar el manto de Spiderman, complementar su vida de adolescente con la de superhéroe, lidiar con la disonancia entre sus planes y los de sus padres, apañar la soledad en la que quedó tras despedirse de sus amigos en la película anterior, y ahora confrontar a un grupo de personas como él, que pretenden que deje morir a su padre para evitar desastres mayores. Se trata de una historia cargada de elementos universales que resuenan orgánicamente con la audiencia, gracias al enfoque humano con que se perfilan los personajes.

Y ni siquiera hemos mencionado al villano. The Spot cumple como una amenaza sólida, aunque el desarrollo de su personaje es, quizá, el más flojo de la película. A ver, entiendo perfectamente que ya hay mucho desarrollo, además de que no todos los villanos tienen que explicarse a fondo… pero en medio de una historia que se ocupa tanto de definir caracteres complejos, sí me pareció un poco superficial lo que hicieron con él, sobre todo en lo referente a su origen. Ahora bien, en la próxima película podríamos ver un poco más y los vacíos podrían llenarse ampliamente, por lo que tampoco hay que apurarse a juzgar. De momento, repito, es una amenaza muy considerable y acorde con las temáticas que se han expuesto, la cual deja todo listo para una épica confrontación final.

Hilando fino, podría enumerar algunos puntos más que también me parecieron flojos, como la poca relevancia de Peter B. Parker o que Spider-Ham y Spider-Noir prácticamente no aparecieran; considerando que son parte del equipo ensamblado en la película anterior, creo que debieron tener al menos alguna línea de diálogo, como sí la tuvo Peni Parker. Imagino que no consiguieron a Nicholas Cage o algo y, de nuevo, al final aparecen con Gwen, lo que garantiza que aparecerán en la tercera parte.

Pero bueno, todo esto buscaba responder una pregunta: ¿qué fue lo que me impidió tener una impresión clara tras ver Across the Spiderverse por primera vez? Creo que todo se resume a que mis expectativas eran muy altas y la película consiguió superarlas ampliamente y de maneras inesperadas, lo que no ocurre con mucha frecuencia. La cinta no se conformó con repetir una fórmula, sino que se atrevió a superarse, expandiendo el mundo narrado y añadiendo complejidad emocional a una narrativa que ya de por sí era densa. A estas alturas, quienes amamos ese mundo en la primera entrega estamos totalmente involucrados con el destino de estos personajes y queremos ver hacia dónde va todo, pues a pesar de lo que podría esperarse dada la enorme oferta de películas de superhéroes, esta historia no es predecible, no hay solo un héroe y su némesis, por más que se refieran varias veces a esa clásica dualidad. Aquí hay mucha gente, muchísima, unos tratan de hacer lo correcto, otros buscan su lugar en el mundo, otros tratan de ayudarse… y todas esas intenciones colisionan en un mar de posibilidades donde podría pasar, francamente, cualquier cosa.

Todo esto combinado con la liviandad y charlatanería propias de una película de Spider-man, que necesita esa jovialidad del personaje, sus chistes y salidas que nos hacen reír muchísimo. Cómo consiguen combinar tan bien los diversos tonos es algo que, francamente, se me escapa. Y me encanta.

Sin duda, salir de la sala de cine tan confundido no me pasaba hacía tiempo con una película de este género, lo que viene muy bien en una época en que creíamos haberlo visto todo.
