El videojuego estará basado 100% en los libros de J. R. R Tolkien y no en las películas de Peter Jackson, más funcionará como una precuela de las mismas, en la que vemos todo lo que hacía Gollum antes de perseguir incansablemente a Frodo para recuperar a su «precioso».
«Es un personaje que te permite mostrar un gran conflicto dentro del mismo, con dos voces que te hablan continuamente, lo que significa que hay una buena razón para incluir y tomar decisiones en el juego: las decisiones de Sméagol o la decisión de Gollum.
