La próxima película de Superman está siendo escrita por Ta-Nehisi Coates y será producida por JJ Abrams. Aún no se ha definido un director para la cinta, pero según informa The Hollywood Reporter, Warner y DC están comprometidos a contratar a un director negro para abordar la que será la primera encarnación cinematográfica de Superman con un actor negro, y una fuente agregó que poner a Abrams al timón no sería buena idea.
Por el momento han sido considerados Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II), J.D. Dillard (Sleight), Regina King, quien recibió elogios por su drama One Night in Miami, y Shaka King, quien es popular en Warner gracias a la nominada al Oscar a mejor película Judas and the Black Messiah. Algunos directores potenciales se han reunido con ambos estudios para ambas películas. Otro director que podría haberse considerado era Ryan Coogler, pero es poco probable pues estará trabajando en Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, que se lanzará el 8 de julio de 2022.
En cuanto a la trama de la película, THR reporta que Coates está escribiendo una historia de origen que verá a Kal-El llegar a la Tierra desde Krypton. Si bien la historia se está elaborando actualmente y muchos detalles podrían cambiar, una opción que se está considerando es que la película sea una pieza de época del siglo XX. Además, el plan actual es que la película será independiente de otras películas de DC y no será parte de un universo existente.
Si bien podría modificarse la historia de origen que ya conocemos, el reporte sí menciona el nombre Kal-El. En algún momento se pensó que este proyecto podría llevar a la gran pantalla a otro personaje que ha ocupado el manto de Superman, Calvin Ellis, que también es llamado «Kalel». El informe no hace la distinción entre si será «Kal-El» o «Kalel», por lo que no se sabe si se tratará de este personaje de DC, o un Clark Kent negro.
En los comics, Calvin Ellis es un kryptoniano que es presidente de los Estados Unidos, en una Tierra diferente en el Multiverso. En su Tierra, se convirtió en Superman además de ser presidente. El personaje está basado en Barack Obama y opera desde la Casa Blanca. Durante Final Crisis, este Superman se unió a un equipo de diferentes versiones de Superman del Multiverso.
Por el momento no se ha elegido a un protagonista para la cinta, y aunque por mucho tiempo se ha rumorado que sea Michael B. Jordan, este ha desmentido su participación. «Me halaga que la gente me tenga en esa conversación», dijo Jordan a THR. «Definitivamente es un cumplido, pero solo estaré viendo en esta».
Por su parte, el escritor Ta-Nehisi Coates es conocido como periodista y escritor de no ficción, así como por sus cómics. Su trabajo en cómics incluye varias series de Black Panther y Capitán América para Marvel, además de trabajar como consultor en World of Wakanda, ganador del premio Eisner. Los libros de no ficción de Coates incluyen The Beautiful Struggle, Between the World and Me y We We Were Eight Years in Power, que recopila sus ensayos sobre la presidencia de Obama.
