Todos tenemos una zona de confort, algunos tienen recuerdos vívidos, cálidos, recuerdos que solo pueden ser accedidos por lugares, la casa de los abuelos, el paseo al parque, las compras luego de ir a misa, el salón de patines… Yo por mi parte tengo a los videojuegos, esas aventuras sublimes que siempre he tratado de entender, de asimilar y en las cuales he intentado mejorar desde que tengo memoria.

Si bien tengo un buen rato jugando a esto que llamamos videojuegos, aún hay joyas que se me escapan, ya fuese por dinero, por tiempo o acceso al conocimiento, siempre quedan de esos juegos que uno siempre quiso jugar, pero que al final, por circunstancias de la vida, agarra tarde. Ese fue mi caso con Chrono Trigger, una aventura tan épica y linda que no puedo creer que haya pasado tanto tiempo sin jugar. Pero ¿Cómo jugar una aventura de 1995 cuando apenas tenía cinco años? ¿Cómo exigirle al Moisés de kinder que probara el futuro de los videojuegos si tan siquiera conocía un control de consola?

La respuesta me llegó en 2016, ese año, por razones editoriales, me vi en un Gamestop de Los Ángeles en el marco del E3. Ahí encontré mi copia de Chrono Trigger en su versión para Nintendo DS, no hace falta mencionar lo emocionado que estaba por poder jugar dicha maravilla de juego, lo inicié ese mismo año para dejarlo abandonado solo meses después por otras aventuras más «modernas» que estaban allí disponibles en mis consolas de actual generación. Sin embargo, una fuerza poderosa me llamaba, una fuerza que, como descubrí más adelante era completamente arrolladora, capaz de hacerme desvelar por una aventura que me tenía entre la indecisión de terminar un gran viaje y querer saber en qué iba a finalizar.

Y es que la gran historia de Chrono no es solo cómo pudo ser concebido, ni el «Dream Team» que lo desarrolló (aunque de eso hay mucho en la magia que nos transmite), ni tampoco la mítica consola a la que llegó. La gran historia de Chrono es poder narrarnos a través de un personaje relativamente vacío (Chrono) aventuras épicas que nos hacen reír, llorar, enfurecer y en general empatizar con pixeles que se nos muestran en pantalla cada cierto tiempo.

Chrono Trigger es un típico viaje del héroe, un Areté que nos recuerda lo bueno de luchar por los demás y hacer el bien. No es solo que la casualidad nos puso a toparnos con una princesa, es la llamada del destino a realizar una gran hazaña a través del tiempo, y con el tiempo en sí mismo, para lograr que Lavos no reviva y destruya el mundo; es la compañía de Robo, un robot tan bien hecho y desarrollado que te sientes más humano cada vez que tienes una conversación con él; es la fiel Lucca que con su ingenio, perseverancia e inteligencia nos logra sacar de un precipitado final, un día sí y al otro también; es la sabiduría de Marle y su tenacidad para seguir adelante pese a su padre y la calidez de una acompañante que siempre quiere lo mejor de vos; es también la valentía de Frog el caballero maldito que no pudo cumplir con su destino manifiesto; es además la agerrida Ayla, una guerrera que no necesita nada más que sus manos para arrancarle a un dinosaurio su cabeza; es en general un gran viaje del que todos somos partícipes.

Al final del día, poco importa que tantas líneas se puedan escribir sobre Chrono Trigger, que si estuvo adelantado a su tiempo, que si realmente logró un impacto en cómo se desarrollarían los jrpgs más adelante, que si su secuela es peor, que si necesita un remake o un remaster… todas esas conversaciones y debates son baladíes y van a morir con el tiempo, lo que no morirá con el tiempo es aquella aventura, cuando un joven aldeano que se quedó dormido llegó tarde a la Feria y cambió al mundo para siempre.
