El canal anunció hoy el lanzamiento de una nueva división dedicada a crear nuevas series y películas dentro del universo de Avatar, y planean iniciar con una nueva película animada. Lo emocionante de esta noticia es que los creadores originales y productores ejecutivos de El Último Maestro Aire y La Leyenda de Korra, Bryan Konietzko y Michael Dante DiMartino estarán a cargo de esta Avatar Studios.
Por el momento no se revelaron muchos detalles de esta próxima cinta pero se espera que la producción comience este año. Además, esta será distribuida en Paramount+, plataformas de Nickelodeon y en cines. Será la primera vez que veamos este universo en la gran pantalla (sí, la primera vez, no nos van a convencer de lo contrario), o al menos la primera en versión animada.
Konietzko y DiMartino compartieron un comunicado en conjunto donde afirman que es difícil creer que han pasado 19 años desde que crearon Avatar, «pero incluso después de todo ese tiempo, todavía hay muchas historias y períodos de tiempo en el mundo de Aang que estamos ansiosos por dar vida. Somos afortunados de tener una comunidad cada vez mayor de fans apasionados que disfrutan explorando el Avatarverso tanto como nosotros».
En exclusiva con EW los directores afirmaron que con esta nueva empresa de Avatar Studios tienen oportunidad de desarrollar la franquicia y su narración a gran escala. «Estamos muy agradecidos con Brian Robbins (presidente de Nickelodeon) y Ramsey Naito (presidente de Nickelodeon Animation) por su entusiasmo y respeto por la propiedad Avatar y por nosotros como sus administradores. Desde el principio, apoyaron nuestros ambiciosos planes y crearon un entorno positivo y proactivo para nosotros». DiMartino y Konietzko concluyeron: «Estamos emocionados de estar de regreso en Nickelodeon, donde comenzó Avatar, haciendo lo que hacemos mejor de la mejor manera posible. No podemos esperar para construir grandes equipos y producciones para hacer realidad toda esta fantasía.»
Esto se suma a la creciente base de fans que ha venido aumentando desde que las series llegaron a Netflix. A pesar de que la serie de Korra no tuvo tanto apoyo en su momento por parte de Nickelodeon, es probable que el canal reconociera el potencial que el fandom representa y las posibilidades de generar nuevos contenidos.
Recientemente se anunció un RPG de mesa basado en este universo, mientras que la adaptación live-action de Netfllix aún está en marcha. De hecho, recientemente se dio a conocer desde el sitio The Illuminerdi, que Albert Kim sería el nuevo showrunner de la serie, y que las edades de los personajes serían modificadas. Al perder a los creadores de la serie original en agosto del año pasado, esta versión no nos emociona tanto y todavía no nos recuperamos de la última adaptación, así que mejor por ahora nos centraremos en celebrar la gran noticia de que Konietzko y DiMartino están de vuelta en Nickelodeon.
