La compañía de streaming al ver que Roma (2018) fue notablemente destacada, incluso recibiendo premios de la Academia. Quiere volver a repetir la misma receta, esta vez de la mano del director Martin Scorsese, un elenco de lujo y una promoción más comercial.
The Irishman (El irlandés) es una producción original de Scorsese para la plataforma norteamericana y se estrenará primero en el Festival de Cine de Nueva York el 27 de septiembre antes de su debut mundialmente. Algo que la película de Cuarón no realizó.
Según Variety, The Irishman tiene un costo de producción aproximado de US$160 millones, esto para la recreación de la década de los años 60 y 70 del siglo pasado. Además del uso de efectos visuales para «rejuvenecer» a parte del elenco.
The Irishman está basada en la historia real descrita en el libro I Heard You Paint Houses, de Charles Brandt, que cuenta la vida del asesino de la mafia Frank «The Irishman» Sheeran involucrado en la misteriosa desaparición de Jimmy Hoffa.
Según la página Web del New York Film Festival de 2019, The Irishman:
es una epopeya ricamente texturizada del crimen estadounidense, una historia densa y compleja contada con asombrosa fluidez. (….) Es un filme sobre la amistad y la lealtad entre hombres que cometen actos indescriptibles y se enfurecen unos contra otros, y la posibilidad de la redención en un mundo donde parece tan distante como el Luna.
The Irishman se estrenará en cines y en Netflix a finales de año, aunque todavía no sabemos una fecha definitiva oficial.
